PHOTOS: See Chickens wearing Sweaters to protect them from cold
A 25-year-old woman and her mother from Falmouth in Cornwall, England, have found a bizarre yet creative way to protect chickens from cold weather conditions – by knitting and kitting them with tiny jumpers to keep them warm.
Nicola Congdon, who stressed the need for people to be aware of the “poor conditions” the chickens live in, considering the fact they’ve no feathers when they are “retired”, said her and her mom’s idea to kit the hens with tank tops is something really different that provide some fun for the chickens.
“They keep them warm and makes the chickens easy to identify”, she adds.
Between them, both mother and daughter own around 60 hens and half of them are former battery chickens, who having spent most of their lives in cages, are not able to adapt to normal weather conditions.
Congdon’s tank tops for chickens is fast becoming famous as she receives enquiries not only from locals, but from other continents with proceeds donated to an AIDS orphanage in South Africa.
“We’ve also had inquiries so far from Canada as well as local people asking for the jumpers. If anyone would like to purchase one we ask for a donation for an AIDS orphanage in South Africa”, added Nicola.
