Nigeria beats Japan 5-4 in their first match at the 2016 Rio Olympics

Nigeria’s men’s football team made a good start for its Olympic campaign, beating Japan 5-4 in Manaus just hours after landing in Brazil following a problem with transportation.

The Super Eagles, as the team is known, were stranded in Atlanta for days amid a saga that got flights cancelled because of missed payments and because a plane was too small. They took off the morning the game was supposed to be played.

The Nigerian squad landed in Manaus at 2:19 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, and the game against Japan began at 9 p.m.

An opening burst produced four goals in 10 minutes.
