Rio 2016: Nigeria may repeat Atlanta 1996 success – Amuneke
Amuneke happened to score the goal that shocked Argentina in that memorable final.
He noted that, “We have to be realistic about our chances too. It is not going to be an easy task, but the coach (Samson Siasia) is experienced.
“He was in charge when Nigeria won the silver medal in 2008 and also led the team to second at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2005.
“In 1996, we had a very experienced team with a lot of talented players most of whom had also played at the FIFA World Cup in 1994. I’m not saying that the players we have now are not talented, but I think winning tournaments these days is not only about talent.
“But there is nothing to say that Nigeria cannot repeat the feat of 1996. It was a beautiful thing that we laid the foundation and others have followed our path, and I think our current team can repeat that success.”
Nigeria will face Sweden, Colombia and Japan in the group stage of the football event in Brazil.
