Pope Francis at a grand ceremony in Vatican on Sunday 4th Sept 2016 declared Mother Teresa a saint before thousands of Catholics.
Mother Teresa is remembered for her work with the poor in the Indian city of Kolkata and is considered by many to be an important religious figure.
Pope Francis said today at the ceremony, “After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint and we enrol her among the saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole Church.”
The decision to announce Mother Teresa a saint was taken after two miracles were attributed to her name.
According to Canadian priest Father Brian Kolodiejchuk, a tribal woman from West Bengal, Monica Besra was cured of a tumor after she prayed to Mother Teresa in 1998. In December 2008, a Brazilian man, Marcilio Haddad Andrino also recovered from a brain disease after a relic of Mother Teresa was placed near his head.
Mother Teresa, also known as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, MC, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. She was born in Skopje, then part of the Kosovo Vilayet in the Ottoman Empire.
