Banking Magnate, Tony Elumelu set to redeem his $500,000 promise to Super Eagles
Banking magnate Tony Elumelu is set to redeem his promise of $500,000 to the Super Eagles, made to the team after they won the Africa Cup of Nations last year.
Following in the footsteps of Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, the former CEO of United Bank for Africa (UBA) revealed that the pledge which was made about a year ago has not been redeemed because the NFF has not been in touch to enable the release of the funds.
Speaking through his aide to The Guardian, Elumelu said: "Months ago, a number of Nigerian citizens pledged to reward the sportsmanship and success of the Super Eagles at the Nations Cup. I was one of those who pledged - and many of us have waited expectantly for the organisers to approach us directly and redeem what has been promised to the team.
"I am a champion of excellence and of youth initiatives, and I don’t make promises I don’t intend to keep. My promise to donate $500,000 to the players and coaches of the Super Eagles still stands."
He therefore called on the nation's football authorities (NFF) to provide him with the account details necessary for the expedient transfer of the amount.
